Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard during a sentencing case on Wednesday, August 17, how Michael Timothy Atoyebi, 34, shouted and threatened to slap his ex Ciara Kehoe before he punched her near her home in Killamarsh.

Prosecuting solicitor Sarah Haslam said: “They had been in a three-month relationship after meeting over the internet. He said he was 25-years-old and he is 34 and he said other things that weren’t true and he has got another ex and they were both being played off against each other. The complainant had got a call from a friend to say the defendant was at her address. She walked home with a friend and didn’t see him and she said she wanted to get all his items out of her house and she was taking bags to the doorstep when she saw the defendant shouting and threatening to slap her.”

Miss Haslam added that the complainant walked past Atoyebi and she made a comment about the way he treated women and he punched her to the face and she fell to the ground.

The complainant suffered reddening to her face and a cut inside her mouth and has stated that she wants the defendant to stop coming to her address.

Atoyebi, of Guildford Avenue, Sheffield, was found guilty of assault by beating after a previous trial after the incident in March.

Defence solicitor Helen Shepherd said he accepts he could have handled the situation differently and this incident has helped him to know how to respond to resolve matters. Magistrates sentenced Atoyebi to a 12 month conditional discharge with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and 150 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £100 costs, a £60 victim surcharge and £300 in compensation. Atoyebi also received a two-year restraining order.
