The new head of Buxton Community School says he will never forget being interviewed for the role – because his first son was born just hours before.
Craig Yates, 41, became head of the school in January this year after successful interviews in September.
But the former science teacher had more than nerves to overcome – as his first son, Elliott, was born hours before the interview.
Craig, who was deputy head at Stockport School prior to his new role, said: “Once I’d made sure everything was okay, and had put him in his nappy, I phoned the school to let them know what had happened.
“I was supposed to be there for the interview at 9am, but couldn’t get there until 11am. Luckily, everyone at the school was so understanding. And so was my wife, Rebecca.”
After a busy few months, Craig says he is now looking to the future – and wants to put a clear emphasis on giving pupils as many options for their futures as possible.
Craig, of Marple, said: “Buxton Community School is a genuinely good school with high-quality teaching and fantastic pupils. But I am aiming to make it even better.
“Hitting Ofsted targets isn’t what drives me. I’m driven by a wish to give all my pupils the brightest futures they can possibly have – and making sure they have as many options as possible.”
Craig says that when he is not working, or tending to his family, he is usually catching up on Rugby League.
“I was born in St Helen’s and have always been a big fan,” said Craig.
