A man involved in a car crash when a BMW ended up on its roof in the front garden of a Buxton house was found to be in possession of drugs, a court heard.

Daniel Adam McHugh was the front seat passenger in the vehicle which landed upside down on the wall of a property on Green Lane on August 20, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard.

A bag inside the car was found to contain 1.32 grams of cannabis, prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said.

McHugh voluntarily attended the police station on November 8 and told officers the cannabis was his and that he had bought it in Hyde to smoke himself.

The 23-year-old, of Coppice Road, Poynton, admitted possessing class B drugs.

Kirsten Collings, defending, said: “To his credit when interviewed, he accepted the bag was his. It is a low level, low value amount of cannabis.

“He received very significant injuries as a result of the accident and was airlifted from the scene. He has extensive injuries to his back and a number of his ribs were broken.”

McHugh was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £15 surcharge.
