A BUXTON teenager is facing a fundraising challenge to make her gap year dreams come true.

Josie Muncaster, 18, is due to spend eight months in Malaysia from January next year teaching English after earning a place through the educational charity Project Trust.

But in order to get to Malaysia, Josie, of Brown Edge Road, needs to raise £4,700 by the end of November.

She said: “I chose to go away with Project Trust because I felt that I wanted to do something worthwhile during my gap year.

“Rather than just taking myself off and travelling, I thought that I would try to find an organisation which would enable me to help people.

“With the Project Trust, I will be living and working in a community completely different from the one that I am so used to, and I will be living there for a whole eight months.

“This means I will be able to build relationships with the locals and truly learn about their culture and lifestyle. I aim to bring a new spirit to their community, while immersing myself in their own, and hopefully inspire some of the people who I will be teaching.

“I am looking forward to teaching English to classes of people and seeing how they develop.

“Many of the people who I will teach will never have been to school or have had any English experience in their lives.

“I’m hoping that I can help develop the community and set up projects such as sports clubs and arts and crafts activities that will have a lasting impact.”

Josie has already organised a number of cake sales and written to organisations who provide grants to help raise the money she needs.

On Friday, June 22, she is holding a fundraising concert at St Thomas More School, Buxton, which will feature a number of local acts and musicians, refreshments and a raffle.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets, priced at £5, £3.50 concessions, are available from the school, from Muzik and More on Buxton Market Place, or from Josie by calling 07779 741 528.

And on July 1, Josie and three friends, Lucy Soden-Craven, Charlotte Gould and Louisa Ramsay, are set to take on the UK Three Peaks Challenge - climbing Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis in just 24 hours.
