Patients are being advised not to leave it too late to order their repeat prescriptions ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

The NHS in Derbyshire is reminding people that running out of daily medication over the East Bank Holiday could have serious consequences for those who rely on them to control heart and breathing problems.

People are also being urged to use NHS services wisely over the bank holiday period as many GP practices will be closed and some pharmacies will also be closed.

Dr Ben Milton, chairman of NHS North Derbyshire CCG, commented: “For those with long-term health conditions, taking daily medication is an important part of their treatment, and many are at risk of feeling unwell or even hospitalisation if medical supplies run out.

“The last thing we want for our patients is to have any time they have off spoilt because they run out of their regular medication and this is why we are advising anyone who regularly orders a repeat prescription to order and collect it as early as possible.”

Dr Steve Lloyd, chairman of NHS Hardwick Clinical Commissioning Group, added: “People need to be aware that their local GP surgery and pharmacy will be closed at times over the Easter period.

“If in doubt it is best to check opening times well in advance.

“If you do become unwell or need medical advice when your GP surgery is closed, please be assured that GP out-of-hours services can be accessed by calling our free, 24-hour, 111 health line. Emergency pharmacies are also available and are best found on www.nhs.uk.”
