Dangerous motorist from Glossop caught driving despite ban

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Thursday, November 19, how Joshua Buxton, 20, of Bank Bottom, Hadfield, Glossop, was spotted driving by police who followed him until he parked up and ran away.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “Buxton was previously convicted in June for dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving without a licence, failing to stop and having no insurance and had been given a 12 month custodial sentence suspended for 24 months.

“More recently, police had been on patrol on November 18 when they spotted a particular VW Golf and did a number plate recognition check and as they followed the vehicle it parked up and the defendant ran off.”

Buxton later admitted being the driver, according to Mrs Allsop, and explained that his partner had been driving the car earlier in the day and he had asked if he could drive it.

Mrs Allsop added: “The defendant saw blue flashing lights and pulled up and ran away because he said he didn’t want to get his partner into trouble.”

Buxton pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and driving without insurance after the offence on November 18.

Mrs Allsop told how Buxton’s current suspended prison sentence was imposed in June for driving a stolen vehicle at 120mph in a 50mph zone on the M6 while overtaking vehicles and forcing others out of the way.

He also reached speeds of 60mph in a £30mph zone, according to Mrs Allsop, and drove into oncoming traffic and uprooted two bollards and a lighting pole.

Mrs Allsop added that Buxton has also failed to comply already with this suspended sentence order so further unpaid work had to be imposed.

Defence solicitor Rebecca Wrack said Buxton drove the VW while he was banned because he was foolish and had only asked his girlfriend if he could drive it a short distance.

Ms Wrack added that Buxton suffers with depression and dyspraxia and is feeling very distressed.

Magistrates committed the case to Derby Crown Court for sentencing on December 10 and Buxton was remanded in custody.
