Crowds flock in to make annual Buxton boxing show a big success

Gary was an integral part of Buxton A.B.C for over 20 years acting as chairman, coach and friend to those who came in to the Gym.

He loved Buxton Amateur Boxing Cub and it was fantastic to see his skill and effort as a coach represented in the action and passion of the each Buxton boxers on the night.

Archie Durham was presented the Gary Thompson Memorial Trophy for Boxer of the Year, prevented from boxing on the show due to injury Archie has had a terrific session so far and Gary would have been full supportive of where this award should reside for the Year.

Lewis Lingaurd kicked off the night’s action in what proved to be the first of a set of terrific contests.

South Normanton always produce strong boxers, as evidenced by Lingaurds unbeaten opponent, who came out with the instruction to box aggressively on the front foot and silence the home crowd.

This was Lingaurd’s first home show after boxing his first three fights in three weeks.

A lesser boxer would have folded under the intense pressure, but Lewis has significant potential and demonstrated this in rounds two and three as both boxers battled for supremacy.

Lingaurd was awarded the win on a split in a terrific cadet bout.

Buxton’s Jake Spencer stepped in against an opponent from Chesterfield ABC, another strong club.

Spencer stuck to his game plan brilliantly, and couldn’t miss with his back hand right landing with powerful eye catching shots and forcing for a standing count in round one.

After another strong round two, Spencer continued to deliver accurate straight shots in the final frame and force the referee to stop the contest. This was a strong performance from the Buxton boxer to build on.

Connor Backham bagged his first victory after a dominant performance, keeping to his boxing basics Connor showed why he has the potential to be a real handful. Blackham maintained good shape and defence throughout the bout, and had continued success throughout with his surging one-two to the head.

This was only Connor’s second contest and, after a very short time in the gym, he has shown significant improvement.

Ollie Wardle dropped a split decision on his debut, but should be proud of his performance.

Both lads boxed well, Wardle boxed well behind his jabs and one-two and will certainly move onwards from this first bout.

The club’s second debutant of the evening dealt any pressure he was feeing and boxed to plan.

Adam Mears looked in control and did well not to rush his work.

Operating behind a heavy jab, Mears has worked hard not to smother his work. This paid dividends as he knocked his opponent back, and followed through with a big sharp back hands.

Will Hoseason collected the Boxer of the Night trophy for his pitch perfect performance in this contest.

Hoseason is forming his unique style, and he put it to good effect inn round one leveraging his movement to avoid his opponents aggressive, and counter with his own spiteful attacks.

During round two and three, Hoseaon controlled the attraction and turned intelligent pressure on route to a clear win.

Syzmon “Canelo” Kozlowski conceded significant high advantage in this bout and, whilst he attempted to press the work there was little landing of note in the first session.

Canelo continued to press in order to close down the gap, jabbing in to range and looking to land the left hook however close rounds went against the Buxton Youth as he dropped to a narrow loss.

Joe Russell stepped up for bout five of the season against a tall and rangy opponent. Russell was matched against tough opposition as he continues to improve his all round game, during this contest he was forced to pressure with the instruction to keep the bout at mid rage and turn up the pressure. His opponent had success on the counter, it was clear he knew what he did well and whilst Buxton Blonde Bomber continued to look for opportunities for each second of each round his opponent picked up a fair victory on a split decision. Russell recognised this was a great learning fight, and left the ring with a smile. The continued development and improvement was clear to see in his improvement.

Josh Taylor got back in to winning ways after a long layoff from the ring.

Taylor controlled the pace of the contest and always looked a level above as he boxed with angles and varied shots up and down the head and body against an opponent who should have been cautioned for continued holding.

Organisers at the club also thanked those who packed in to make the event such a big success.
