New Mills focus in search for missing man

POLICE have begun searching land in New Mills in relation to the mysterious disappearance of a man over 30 years ago.

Officers were today (Thursday) examining land in the vicinity of Ballbeard Farm, off Laneside Road, after receiving fresh information concerning missing man Fred Handford.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire police said: “The search commenced today (Thursday) and concerns land around the farm. It is being searched because we have received fresh information from the public.”

Mr Handford was in his 50s when he disappeared in 1976.

The spokesperson added the inquiry was at an early stage, and officers were dealing with a number of lines of investigation.
