POLICE are searching for this man (pictured) in connection with a purse theft in New Mills.
At around 4.50pm on March 17, a 71-year-old woman returned to her house in Combs Close and put her handbag on the doorstep while opening her front door. She was distracted by speaking to her neighbour and the two women went inside the neighbouring house but the victim left her handbag on her doorstep. Shortly after, a man knocked on the door and returned the handbag but a purse, containing cash and a debit card, was missing.
A neighbour told police he spoke to a stranger in the street shortly before the theft and has worked with officers to produce the above image of the man, who is slim, white, aged around 20 and about 6ft tall. He wore a grey hooded top and dark trousers or jeans and had short brown hair and uneven teeth.
Anyone with information should call 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
