A Glossop teenager found in possession of cannabis has been given a conditional discharge.

Police searched the Shrewsbury Street address of Jake Sakalis on April 23, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard.

During the search they found a small snap bag containing 6.9 grams of cannabis in Sakalis’ bedroom, prosecutor John Cooper said.

In interview he admitted the drug was his and said he had been using cannabis for between 18 and 24 months. He said he usually bought half an ounce of the drug at a time for between £110 and £120 and then divided it up into £10 bags.

The 18-year-old admitted possessing a class B drug.

Lisa Tinsley, defending, said Sakalis suffered from a painful medical condition and used the drug to help with pain relief. She added: “At the time the cannabis was discovered he was already seeking to reduce his reliance on cannabis.”

He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £10 surcharge. Magistrates ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drug.
