Ex-football coach with Derbyshire links charged with nine sexual offences

A former football coach with links to Derbyshire has been charged with nine sexual offences in relation to two complainants.

Barry Bennell appeared at Warrington Magistrates' Court via video link from HMP Littlehey on Monday, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The 66-year-old stands accused of three counts of a serious sexual offence and six counts of indecent assault.

A CPS spokesperson said in a statement: “The CPS made the decision to charge Mr Bennell, a former football coach, after reviewing a file of evidence from Cheshire Police relating to allegations of non-recent child sexual abuse.”

Mr Bennell previously worked as a coach for Crewe Alexandra and a scout for Manchester City.

He also worked as a social care worker at Taxal Edge, Whaley Bridge, High Peak, between November 1979 and July 1981.
