A Dove Holes man was caught drink-driving on his way to work, a court heard.

John Lowe was stopped driving a Landrover Freelander by police at 6.15am on Hallsteads in Dove Holes on August 18, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard.

Officers noticed he smelt of alcohol so breathalysed him and he gave a reading of 48, the legal limit is 35.

Lowe, 59, of Beaumont Drive, admitted drink-driving.

Kirsten Collings, defending, said: “The consequences are catastrophic for this defendant. The day before he had gone to a family meal celebrating the birth of his first grandchild. He didn’t believe he had drunk to excess and didn’t believe he was over the limit.

“He works in maintenance for Ikea and will lose his job.”

Lowe was banned for 12 months, fined £276 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £28 surcharge.
