Car thief taken to hospital after smashing through Buxton roadside barriers

The stolen Toyota Yaris can be seen lying crumpled on grass at the side of Fairfield Road with its windscreen shattered as police guard the scene.

An onlooker told how an ambulance, four police cars and a fire engine rushed to deal with the incident.

Incredibly the 28-year-old man driving the car survived the horror crash and was taken to hospital after the collision - which happened on Wednesday at 3.25am.

He was later arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, aggravated vehicle taking and driving and insurance offences.

An onlooker described hearing ‘a massive bang’ as the collision unfolded.

She said: “We heard a massive bang so we ran out to the front window and some car had gone through railings by the river - there was smoke everywhere.”

Police remained at the scene until 4.45am.
