An alcoholic artist has been jailed after stealing from a Glossop shop on four separate occasions.

Nathan Aiyna Sassen was arrested on February 24 after a pack of chicken, coriander and a bulb of garlic valued at £5.99 were taken from the Marks and Spencer store, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard.

He also admitted taking two bottles of Jack Daniels whisky from the shop on November 11, 2013, stealing the same items on January 15, 2014, and stealing two bottles of Jack Daniels and a bottle of Fairy Liquid on February 7, 2014.

He had been given a conditional discharge for shoplifting and possession of cannabis at High Peak Magistrates’ Court in August 2013, which he was in breach of by committing these offences, Mr Cooper said.

Sassen, 38, of Stanley Road, Whalley Range, Manchester, admitted the offences.

Estelle Parkhouse, defending, said Sassen was hoping to get a place on a residential detox programme.

She added: “He has mental health issues and is self medicating with alcohol and cannabis. You are dealing with somebody who is a talented artist.”

Sassen was jailed for a total of 15 weeks.
