Council cuts: you decide

HIGH Peak residents are being encouraged to have their say on how they would make the £25 million cut in spending needed by Derbyshire County Council.

An online budget calculator gives residents the chance to experience the difficult choices the council is facing when looking at the budget for the next financial year. Those taking part can see how their decisions could affect council services.

The budget calculator, which is available at, allows choices to be made about the level of spending across seven council areas:

* Children’s services and education

* Adult social care

* Culture and community services

* Environment and waste

* Community safety and regeneration

* Roads and transport

* Council support and public engagement.

The closing date is December 10 and the decision on the council’s budget will be made in February 2013. The budget calculator is also being used by authorities across the country and locals can see how their choices match up with those from elsewhere.
