Concerns growing over attacks on badgers in High Peak

The number of incidents has increased in the last two months with one involving all four holes in a badger sett at Red Gap Lane, Green Fairfield, being blocked with stones

Rod Leach, a member of High Peak Badger Group, said: “Not only are we dealing with unprecedented levels of persecution but we have to attend call-outs to other general badger welfare issues, like road traffic casualties, often fatal.

“The borough council are no longer able to dispose of badger carcasses so it is down to the group members to attend. It is an offence for anyone, not authorised, to be found in possession of a badger alive or dead.”

The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and the High Peak Badger Group, are appealing for walkers and the general public to be aware of the growing problem.

A wildlife trust spokesman said, “The incidents of rural crime and wildlife crime in the area have suddenly increased so we ask people to be extra vigilant and report anything suspicious.”
