Closing date for Buxton's Marks and Spencer store announced

The company has confirmed that the Spring Gardens store will close in April.

In a statement, an M&S spokesperson said: “Proposing to close M&S Buxton was a difficult decision. Over the past few weeks we’ve been consulting with our colleagues and, following this rigorous process, the decision has been made to close our store on Saturday 27th April.

“We’d like to thank our customers, the local community and their representatives for the feedback they’ve given. We hope to see lots of customers continuing to shop with us at our other stores in the region and on M&S.com.”

Commenting on the announcement, High Peak MP Ruth George said: ""I'm very disappointed by Marks & Spencer's announcement of the definite closure of the Buxton store, so soon after claiming they were listening to proposals from staff.

"When I met with the company to press the case for Buxton, they were obviously more interested in saving costs in the short term by closing the store than in long term investment.

"This is obviously a great blow for Buxton town centre, for loyal customers of M&S, and especially for the excellent and close-knit team of staff at the store.

"M&S did commit to me that if the store closes and staff struggle to other sites, that they will be offered a redundancy package, and I will support the staff to make sure they get the best deal they can from the company which I feel has let them down.

"I will also continue support initiatives to improve Buxton Town Centre to help make it nicer place to shop and to encourage new businesses to take premises.

"I hope that High Peak Borough Council will now take a collaborative approach, look again at free parking and toilet provision as I’ve called on them to do, and seek the involvement of local organisations, such as the Town Team, Vision Buxton, and independent retailers, as part of their Future High Street funding bid.”
