The popular chicken restaurant chain will take its place at the site of the former Blockbuster store on Alma Leisure Park.

The hotly-anticipated South African eaterie will sit alongside the likes of Frankie and Benny’s, McDonald’s and Cineworld.

Builders are currently redeveloping the site – and will soon be erecting signs featuring the famous Nando’s cockerel.

The restaurant is expected to open some time this autumn although an exact date has not yet been revealed.

The Derbyshire Times exclusively revealed in March that the popular franchise was coming to Chesterfield – sparking massive interest.

On Twitter, @leeeonix said: “Nothing can hide my excitment for Nando’s coming to Chesterfield.”

However, not everyone was happy.

On Facebook, Sally Lee said: “How about supporting local independant restaurants instead of ‘could be anywhere’ eating places?”

And on Twitter, bbbbwebb said: “Couldn’t be less bothered about a Nando’s in Chesterfield.”

The announcement came after Chesterfield man Chris Cordin set up an online petition calling for the national chain to move to the town.

He said: “I started this petition because I always had to travel to Sheffield to get a Nando’s – they have three or four of them there already.

“I’m very happy it’s coming to Chesterfield.

“I’m a big chicken lover and glad I won’t have to go far to get my fix now!”

Founded in 1987, Nando’s operates about 1,000 outlets in 24 countries.

A Nando’s spokesman said more details would be released soon.
