Chesterfield and Alfreton Phones4u shops won’t reopen

Five jobs will be lost at the stores in Vicar Lane and Institute Lane, it has been confirmed.

Another four members of staff at the branches – currently retained in the “short-term” to help with closures – could also eventually lose their jobs.

Dixons Carphone will hire the four people who worked at a Phones 4u concession at its Currys/PC World store at Ravenside Retail Park, Chesterfield.

The firm collapsed after it failed to strike a deal to continue selling the services of mobile network companies EE and Vodafone.

Administrators PwC said the beleaguered company had closed 362 stores and cut almost 1,700 jobs.

Rob Hunt, joint administrator and PwC partner, said: “It is with much regret that we have made the difficult decision to close a large number of stores.

“It is a very sad day for the staff working at those locations and our thoughts are with them.

“We will make every effort to help the affected staff, working with the Phones 4u human resources team over the coming days to support employees.”

Phones4u shops will also close in Derby and Buxton.

On Monday, EE said it would buy 58 Phones 4u stores which would help to save more than 350 jobs.

Before going into administration, Phones 4u had a turnover of £1billion.

A statement on the company’s website said customers’ mobile contracts would continue. It added: “Customers should continue to pay their network provider as normal.”
