A CHANCE meeting led to romance for Jean and Brian Barton who have just celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
The couple met while Jean was visiting Buxton and the two agreed to write to each other.
Jean said: “The following Saturday there was a knock on the door in Preston, where I lived, and there he was.” Brian had cycled from his home in Chapel-en-le-Frith to see Jean.
They married two years later at Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Church, on September 1.
The couple, who made their home in the town, have two children and two grandchildren and celebrated their anniversary with a family meal.
Before he retired, Brian, 85, a keen gardener, drove for Sam Longsons for 35 years and before that had worked at Ferodo.
Jean, 78, a member of Chapel Ladies Choir for 31 years, and now an honorary member, worked at the Devonshire Royal Hospital, Ferodo, in various shops and in local schools.
The couple put the secret to their success down to perseverance.
