Buxton Sea Cadets' commanding officer Bruce Luckman lands service award

Buxton Sea Cadets commanding officer Lt (SCC) Bruce Luckman RNR has been presented with a Lord Lieutenant's Certificate for Meritorious Service.

He Joined the Sea Cadets as a uniformed instructor in in 1984, after going up to the unit to help to teach sailing.

Bruce was promoted to an officer in 1990. After spending two years as the unit’s 1st Lieutenant he took charge of Buxton unit in November 1993. In 1997 he was confirmed as commanding officer.

This year was his 25th inspection in charge of the unit.

Lt Luckman was delighted to receive the award which came as a total surprise. So much so he was at a loss for words which he admits was not like him at all. He expressed thanks to all involved with the award at both district and area level. He praised the help and support of the unit chairman, the staff and the UMT and that of his wife and family.

This year the inspection was carried out by the area officer Commander Bagot-Jewitt RN with Lt Cdr John Matthews.

As well as a guard of honour. the cadets put on a Nelsonian cannon display, a rigging demonstration on one of the new quest sailing dinghies and the unit’s newly formed band performed for the first time.

OC Bethany Leah - Lesley Hallam Award for most improved and consistent effort (senior cadet);

AC Kori Dolby - Ken Fowler Award for the most improved senior cadet in waterborne activities;

JC Harley Smallwood - Top Dog award for the most improved and consistent effort (junior cadet);

Llewelyn Jones - George Ball award for the most improved junior cadet in waterborne activities.

The majority of parents attended the event. A buffet and refreshments were provided.
