Local organisations are behind an ambitious plan to raise funds for new lights in the town - and are calling on residents and businesses to dig deep and show their support.

Steve Bradshaw, who is leading the ‘Buxton for Christmas’ team, said: “We really want Buxton to up its game and make the town come alive both day and night over the Christmas season.

“We intend to buy new coloured lights for the six trees supplied by the council and reuse the white lights elsewhere in the town.

“We have big plans but really need all the help we can get so are asking everyone to join in by crowdfunding.”

Buxton Sparkles, Buxton Town Team and Buxton WI are aiming to build on the progress of recent years to make the town more festive.

Andrea Lewis of Buxton Sparkles, which organises the magical Christmas lantern parade through the town, said: “We want our streets to reflect our vibrant community during the dark winter months so are asking everyone to contribute a small amount to help.

“Just £1 will buy one bulb which should last for ten years.”

Buxton WI has already raised £1,500 towards new lights for Buxton, providing the sparkling white lights which were a feature on The Slopes last year.

Ellen Woolliscroft, WI branch president, added: “If we can do it, anyone can. Come on Buxton. Let’s be the brightest place in Derbyshire at Christmas.”
