Buxton Legion president dines at Buckingham Palace

The president of the Buxton Royal British Legion branch had afternoon tea with The Queen.

Bob Nicol attend the exclusive garden party at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, May 15 as a recognition for all of his hard work and dedication to the legion.

The 67-year-old said: “It was such a great honour to be invited and really was a thoroughly wonderful day and one I will remember forever.”
He was selected to go to the Palace by the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire back in December although his official invite did not arrive until April.

The Queen hosts three garden parties a year and she was joined on the lawn by Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Andrew and Princess Anne.

Bob, who arrived in the capital the night before visited Harrods with his wife, said: “The most amazing thing for me was walking through the state entrance into the Palace.

“We took the same route as The Queen would take when she joined us later in the afternoon so that was really special.”

Bob praised the service, and the food and said the gardens were immaculate.

He said: “It was so big and so beautiful and very quiet - you forgot you were in the middle of central London at times.

“Although it is still early in the growing season the plants were marvellous and there was not a weed in the lawn.”

He added: “I had the most wonderful day and it was a moment to treasure and thank you to the Lord Lieutenant for putting me forward to go I am really humbled.”
