Buxton juniors impress at Todd Crag Fell Race

Buxton AC juniors made an impressive start to the English running season in the Todd Crag Fell race '“ the first of six championship events.

By the end of it, Buxton occupy the eighth team position out of 35, putting them in with a shout of hitting the heights they achieved last year.

Team coach Rachel Dowle said: “The English Junior Fell Championships brings together the best of the best in young talent, and once again the Buxton Juniors have shown they can hold their own at a National Level.

“With the added potential of qualification to represent England internationally, this series brings out the best in our talented juniors.

“But, most impressively, it shows what a cohesive and strong team they are - supporting each other and sharing the the experience of competition in some of the most extreme environments they have ever raced in.

“We really could not be more proud of them all.”

The U19s came in the due of Jacob Winfield and Dan Soles who took the top 10 by storm with Jacob ending up sixth, pushed by Dan who finished a very strong 10th.

The U17s had fantastic performances throughout.

Sam Soles led the side to knocking on the podium doors in sixth, followed swiftly by Finn Moffatt (11th) and the Diamond twins, Ed and Stuart, who both secured top 20 finishes in 15th and 18th respectively.

Heather Wilshaw was the only U17 Buxton girl, finishing 15th in her category.

The U13s had just the one Buxton representative in Rebecca Cudahy, who placed a very strong 28th.

Will Longden (U15s) showed that experience isn’t everything, finishing an outstanding fourth in his first ever fell race closely pursued by another fell debutant in Matt Schofield and young Caleb Winfield, who finished a brilliant 29th.

Meanwhile, the U11 girls came in threes with Rachel Cudahy leading the team in 16th trailed closely by Lucy Whelan before Molly Golden finishing in 27th respectively.

Henry Hazlehurst from the U11 boys had proven that a fell race is possible with only one shoe, finishing 33rd out of a very strong field.

Youngest Buxton runner was Jimmy Golden, who competed in the U9 category and finished 29th.
