Two roads have been closed because of black ice and impending snow.

Cheshire police said the A537 Cat and Fiddle route between Macclesfield and Buxton and the A54 Bosley lights junction to Buxton are shut.

A police spokesman said: “A considerable amount of water on land adjacent to the roads is flowing on to the carriageway and washing away any grit and de-icing agents highways have been using.

“The water is then subsequently turning to black ice.

“This makes the road conditions treacherous and not suitable for vehicular traffic.

“Highways also advise us that up to ten centimetres of snow is expected in this area overnight which will only worsen the situation.

“After consultation with ourselves and Derbyshire police, highways have made the decision to fully close both roads.

“Highways have gritters and snow ploughs on standby but it is likely that the roads will be fully closed all night.

“We will keep you updated of any changes.

“In the meantime drivers are asked to avoid the area and find alternative routes.”
