BUXTON CARNIVAL DAY 2016: What's on when and where

The carnival parade will get underway at 2pm on Saturday, starting outside Buxton's railway station.

The day’s main event is the Carnival Day procession, which starts at 2pm from outside Buxton Railway Station. The parade will be led by festival queen Victoria Farlam, rosebud Evie Howe and their retinue.

The parade follows a route along Station Road, Spring Gardens, The Quadrant, St John’s Road, Burlington Road, West Road, High Street, Market Place and Terrace Road.

By this time, the winners of the parade classes will already be known. Judging for the parade and carnival trophy classes commences at midday at St Thomas More School, on Palace Road.

Buxton Well Dressing Festival Queen, Paige Farlam, will be joined by rosebud Evie Howe and her retinue at the head of the carnival procession on Saturday.

Also prior to the start of the carnival parade, runners will line up on New Wye Street, near the Waitrose car park, for the Carnival Day Road Race. The race gets underway at 1.45pm.

Another Carnival Day highlight will be a Spitfire flypast courtesy of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), which is scheduled for around 2.30pm - although the timing is subject to change at short notice.

The Market Place funfair will be open from noon right through until 11.30pm, and for children there will also be a bouncy slide and rides on the Pavilion Gardens promenade from 10am.

There will be a range of entertainment taking place in the Pavilion Gardens throughout the day, including Orchestra in the Park from 2pm. There will also be live music from 11th Hour outside the Portland Hotel at 1pm.

Home-town favourites The Billerettes are due to make an appearance.

Following the carnival parade at 4pm, there will be music in the Gardens from Dronfield St John’s Ambulance Band and City of Manchester Fire Brigade Pipe Band, plus performances by home-town favourites The Billerettes.

The Parade of Queens begins at 4pm adjacent to the swimming pool, and the Buxton Lions’ duck race along the River Wye - featuring 2,000 numbered ducks - will get underway at 4.15pm. Tickets for the duck race are available from Morrisons and, on the day itself, from the Gardens arena, with cash prizes of £100, £50 and £25 up for grabs.

Local bands Long in the Tooth, Illegal Regals, GrooveCake and Radio Memphis will also take to the stage for a free concert from 4.30pm.
