Expect a carnival atmosphere in Buxton on Saturday (July 14) as thousands of people flock to enjoy the town's annual celebration.

The procession will be led by this year's festival queen Phoebe Mitchell, who will be joined by rosebud Jessie May Owen, senior attendants Rihanna-Maia Lomas, Yvie Kirton-Darling and Marianna Mosley; junior attendant Freya Grimes and pageboy Edward Austin.

Commencing at 2pm on Station Road, the parade will follow a route along Spring Gardens, The Quadrant, St John’s Road, Burlington Road, West Road, High Street and Terrace Road, culminating back in The Quadrant at around 4pm.

Road closures will be in place for the duration of the parade and motorists are warned to expect delays.

A warm-up to the parade will be the Buxton Athletic Club road race, which will start at 1.45pm on New Wye Street.

A Parade of Queens will be held in the Pavilion Gardens, opposite the swimming pool, from 4pm, and there will be live entertainment on the Gardens promenade with performances from marching bands and the Billerettes. The children's rides and amusements on the promenade will be open from 10am.

The Buxton & District Lions Duck Race gets underway at 4.15pm in the Pavilion Gardens with the release of ducks into the River Wye. Participants purchase tickets containing numbers which correspond to the numbers on a duck. The tickets, priced £1 each, are on sale at Morrison's in Buxton until Friday, and on the Pavilion Gardens promenade prior to the race. Prizes of £100, £50 and £25 respectively are up for grabs for the top three finishers.

The Carnival Concert always draws large crowds and will see four bands performing live in the Gardens between 4.30pm and 7pm.

As usual, the funfair on the Market Place will be open until 11.30pm.

All timings are approximate as stated in the official souvenir Buxton Well Dressing Festival programme, copies of which are available from the Tourist Information Centre, Hargreaves and the well dressing stall at St Ann's Well, priced £1.
