An apprentice at Lafarge Tarmac’s Tunstead site in Buxton has scooped the prestigious East Midlands ‘Apprentice of the Year’ Award from Chesterfield College.
Abigail Finney, a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, beat competition from 4,000 other apprentices to take home the title. She is studying for a BTEC in Mechanical Engineering at Chesterfield College, while working within the maintenance division at the plant, which involves making, fitting and repairing parts to various pieces of quarrying equipment.
“I was surprised and shocked to win the award, but I am over the moon,” she said.
“The work I do is different every day due to the vast amount of equipment that’s brought in, so every day brings with it an interesting new challenge. I’ve learnt so much since I began my apprenticeship.”
