Pub, club and bar workers from Buxton have been studying for a qualification in responsible alcohol sales as part of a long-running campaign.
The Intoxicated campaign, run by Derbyshire Police and High Peak Borough Council, aims to slash alcohol-related offences by stopping the sale of alcohol to drunks and educate bar staff on their responsibilities.
For the past few weeks, staff from licensed premises in and around Buxton have been studying for a Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (ARAR).
The training has covered a wide variety of topics including how to recognise drunkenness, licensing law, protecting children, personal safety and how pubs, clubs and bars can help cut alcohol-related crimes.
PC Sandra Barlow, from the police licensing team, said: “When we started Intoxicated, we knew how important it was for us to offer extra training to staff so they are fully clued-up on the law that affects them.
“It’s not just about us carrying out visits to licensed premises to enforce those laws; we want to give licensees and their staff the support they need and that is where this qualification comes in.
“The uptake has been fantastic and the range of topics the bar staff have had access to will help keep licensed premises in our area safe places to visit and enjoy.”
The sessions are provided by Chris Theyer of Remscott Training and Development and funded by Derbyshire Police, High Peak Borough Council and brewing giants SABMiller.
Three training days have been held at Buxton Town Hall so far, with more planned over the coming weeks. Bar staff are taken through the various topics and then take an exam at the end of the day to earn the nationally-recognised ARAR certificate.
Staff from venues including Level 2, Spa Bar, the Miltons Head and the Eagle attended the most recent training day.
Hayley Brailsford, who works at the Eagle, in Buxton, said: “The training was really useful and touched on a lot of topics we knew and others that we didn’t.
“It was good to learn how we can deal with someone who has had too much to drink and I’ll feel more confident in that situation now.”
The Intoxicated campaign was launched last year.
