BURNT BODY MURDER: '˜Do YOU know anyone who is missing?' ask detectives

The plea comes as part of a murder probe launched after a dismembered and badly burnt body was found in a lay-by on the A628 earlier this week.

However, due to the condition of the body, the victim’s identity remains unknown.

A dedicated phone line has been set up for people to call with any information that could help the inquiry – which can be called on 0800 056 0944.

Since it went live yesterday, detectives have received more than 30 calls from members of the public but are urging others to get in touch.

Officers also want people to think about people they may not have seen for a while.

Assistant Chief Constable Bill McWilliam said: “We are asking our other police forces to check their missing person records but it is possible that this man might not have been reported missing at all.

“This person lived somewhere and they will suddenly no longer be there. What we are asking is for people to think about whether someone they know has not been around for a while.

“We want to hear from members of the public who may have not seen a neighbour, a friend or colleague, or indeed any members of their family recently.

“That information could help us to establish who the victim of this murder is.”

The body was found by a member of the public at 12.30pm on Monday, October 10, but police believe it was left in the lay-by sometime between 9pm and midnight on Sunday, October 9.

Officers are asking anyone who was in the area between 9pm and midnight on Sunday, October 9 to come forward. They also want to speak to anyone who regularly travels along the A628 between Tintwistle and the Flouch roundabout to get in touch so their vehicles can be eliminated from the inquiry.

Police want drivers to ring in with the make and model of their vehicle and the time that they made their journey.

Anyone with information as to the identity of the victim is also asked to come forward.
