Boy racer has BMW confiscated

A DRIVER had his car confiscated by police after being caught doing handbrake turns in a town centre car park.

Police on patrol on the Spring Gardens stopped the driver at the car park near to Waitrose at around 12.15am on Wednesday, August 1.

The silver BMW was confiscated as it was the second time the driver been issued with a Section 59 warning in a 12 month period.

He had been previously stopped by police at Furness Vale in a similar incident in May.

Police have the power to seize vehicles under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act if, after receiving a warning, a motorist drives their car carelessly or without consideration for other road users, and in a way which causes alarm, distress or annoyance.

The 20-year-old man now faces paying a fine of at least £150 to get the vehicle back.

PCSO Matt Cox of the Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are working to address concerns from local residents about safe and responsible driving.

“We hope that the seizure will send a clear message to others that if they continue to drive in an anti-social manner then they could end up losing their vehicle.”
