A bonfire and fireworks display took place in Sterndale Moor at the weekend in memory of two young men who died in a crash.

Robert Jenkins, 32, and Craig Brassington, 27, both died after the Land Rover Discovery they were travelling in left the road and collided with a tree on the A515 near Buxton.

Both men, from Sterndale Moor, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The bonfire, fireworks display and a disco were called off after the tragedy – but they went ahead as planned on Friday in memory of the two men following a request from their families.

A spokesman for Sterndale Moor Social Club said: “Thank you to all who came to show their love and support to two Sterndale Moor gentlemen.

“Our hearts go out to both their friends and family.

“The club will certainly be a quieter place without them here.”

On the club’s Facebook page, Claire Jones said: “A fantastic display. Well done Sterndale Moor Social Club – they would have been proud. RIP Craig and Rob.”

Fred Smith said: “Two bigger personalities there could not have been. You will both be so sadly missed by a lot of people old and young. Loved you both.”

Terry Parkinson commented: “They are up in the sky looking down.”

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision – which happened at about 12.45am last Thursday – is still ongoing.

Anyone with information should call Derbyshire police on 101, quoting incident 11 of November 12.
