An author is calling for the railway line between Buxton and Matlock to be reopened as he believes it will bypass congested roads and “radically improve” journey times.

In his new book, The Great Railway Conspiracy, author David Henshaw claims that reopening the railway would bring huge benefits to the area.

David said: “Reconnecting the rail link between Matlock with Buxton would provide a long distance route for passengers and freight, it would enable a new commuter route and carry visitors right into the Peak District National Park – taking pressure off congested roads.”

The book documents the many railway closures which a report by Dr Beeching in 1963 – of which the Buxton to Matlock line was one.

The book also documents that many lines closed by Beeching – from the Scottish borders to Cornwall – have reopened with enormous success.

“I believe there are up to thirty railway lines which could be successfully reopened in Britain,” said David.
