Appeal for witnesses after man’s death

Police investigating the unexplained death of a 61-year-old man in New Mills are appealing for witnesses.

On Sunday March 23 at 1.30am, a man was found with fatal injuries on the A6, Buxton Road between Newtown Primary School and the Chalkers Snooker Club. Detective Inspector Shaun McElheron of Buxton CID said: “We are appealing for any pedestrians or drivers, who may have seen this man walking along Buxton Road, Whaley Bridge, or the A6 towards New Mills between 11.50pm on Saturday March 22 and 1.30am on Sunday March 23.

“The man was wearing dark clothing and possibly wearing spectacles.

“We are particularly looking for people who could have seen this man around Newtown Primary School between 1.15am and 1.45am and drivers who were diverted or had cause to turn around near the primary school prior to the emergency services attending.

“We are currently looking at CCTV footage and would like to speak to a man and woman that were walking past the primary school towards Furness Vale just prior to the incident.

“Members of the public that were in the area at the time could hold vital information that could help with police investigations and we would urge anyone with any information to contact us using the non-emergency number 101.”

A 73-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently on police bail pending further enquiries.
