A High Peak councillor is backing police calls for witnesses after diesel was poured into a duck pond in Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens.

The incident took place on Tuesday, May 14, after thieves broke into a tunnel used by the miniature train and stole two cans of diesel and ticket rolls.

The break-in was reported to police at around 7.20pm by a member of the public who noticed that the tunnel gates had been forced open.

Councillor Godfrey Claff, responsible for the Pavilion Gardens, said: “It beggars belief that anyone should behave in this manner especially during daylight hours when the Gardens are still being enjoyed by the public.”

Anyone with information its asked to call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
