The Highlands of Scotland is one of these rare places of true peace and tranquility.

And there is one place in the Highlands where you can experience this wonderful wilderness in the lap of luxury. That place is called Eagle Brae, a development of seven luxury log cabins just to the north of Loch Ness.

Eagle Brae is a place to behold, located in a stunning setting close to the River Glass.

The phrase ‘log cabin’ doesn’t really do these unique holiday homes justice.

These ‘cabins’ have been expertly and painstakingly hand-crafted from huge, and I mean HUGE, cedar logs.

From the outside they look absolutely fantastic, but it is once you step inside that the you are hit by the WOW factor.

The interiors ooze style and the attention to detail in the decor is very, very impressive.

The cabins are open plan and the walls are bedecked with local artwork, Scottish motifs, and wood furnishings hand-carved in the Himalayas.

Every square inch is pristine.

Each cabin has a log-burning stove, a large, well equipped kitchen, not just one but two living room areas, with TV and DVD player, a study area with computer and printer, and free WIFI.

Throughout our stay we kept discovering lovely little touches designed to make visitors feel welcome and make your stay even more enjoyable and rewarding.

For example, when we checked into our cabin we discovered a great little welcome pack/basket crammed full of delightful little locally-sourced treats including drams of Whisky, preserves, shortbread, crackers, and local ales.

And it is not just the welcome that is warm. Despite being stuck on the side of a snowy Scottish mountain, the Eagle Brae lodges are positively toastie thanks to a particularly efficient and effective heating system, complete with underfloor heating.

The log-burning stoves also add an extra level of glowing warmth and cosyness.

Often on self-catering breaks the kitchen provided is limited but this far from the case at Eagle Brae. The kitchen is a good size and is equipped with all the utensils, pots, pans, and crockery that you could possibly want or need. As with everything about this resort, a lot of thought has been put into the kitchen facilities, and all of these items are of excellent quality.

For those who fancy a break from the kitchen Eagle Brae offers a concierge service providing home-cooked ready meals and drinks and other light refreshments.

Part of the charm of Eagle Brae is its clever layout. It is laid out in a way that you are not overlooked by any of the other cabins, which definitely adds to the away-from-it-all privacy factor.

Large windows and patio doors provide plenty of natural light, as well as allowing you to gaze out in wonder at the idyllic landscape and the myriad wildlife (Deer were frequent visitors to the outside of our cabin during our stay).

Each lodge has an outside decking area with seating and a dining table, and I imagine this offers fantastic al fresco dining opportunities for visitors on long summer evening.

As well as offering luxury accommodation, Eagle Brae also has stellar eco credentials.

The holiday accommodation is completely carbon neutral, It has a micro-hydro scheme which provides domestic electricity and hot water, biomass wood-pellet burners provide under floor heating, and all water is abstracted from a natural underground source.

The small, exclusive resort and its remarkable cabins are so glorious that it would be tempting to just hunker down for the duration of your stay, but that would mean missing out on all the other local splendours that abound in this part of the world.

During our visit we took a trip to the magnificent Glen Strathfarrar, which is just a stone’s throw from Eagle Brae.

The glen offers beautiful scenery and fabulous walking opportunities, and is considered by many to be the best glen in the whole of Scotland.

We hiked for a good three hours and didn’t encounter another soul. Bliss.

Another short drive away was Plodda Falls - an epic 130ft waterfall set amongst stunning woodland.

And of course, no trip to the area would be complete without taking in Loch Ness, or one of the many distilleries which produce some of the finest single malts.

The staff at Eagle Brae (who offered sublime service throughout our stay) have great local knowledge and offered great advice on local places of interest.

If you choose the team at Eagle Brae can arrange a number of other activities to make your stay even more memorable.

These activities include fishing, birdwatching, kayaking, stalking/hunting, golf, pony trekking, and archery.

All in all our short break at Eagle Brae was nothing short of amazing, and will live long in the memory. I can’t wait to go back.
