READER Dave Homer has submitted this week’s Looking Back photograph, which he took of Spring Gardens, Buxton, in July 1983.

The picture shows Spring Gardens as the then main arterial road through Buxton, prior to the construction of the Station Road bypass in the mid-1980s and the eventual pedestrianisation of the town’s main shopping street.

Dave recalls: “Reminded me of the view pre-bypass, when we had a cinema, when we had Kennings!

“The train on the viaduct is not passing, but stabled there to ease congestion in the railway station area.”

To the right of the picture is the old Spa Cinema, which was demolished in 1987. The site is now home to the town’s job centre.
