Soloists bring notes of cheer to concert

A happy encounter between Hayfield Singers and a barman during mid-rehearsal drinks at a local pub has resulted in two new soloists for the Hayfield Singers' spring concert.

The concert will be held on Sunday, April 24, at 7.30pm in St Matthew’s Parish Church, Hayfield.

Edd Ingham, a classically-trained tenor who has sung for national audiences, including the Lord Mayor of London, was working behind the bar at the Royal Hotel in Hayfield when a group from the Hayfield Singers came in and got chatting.

When Edd mentioned he sang professionally the idea was born to invite him to perform. However, it turned out to be a double-jackpot for the singers as Edd’s fiancée Sarah Holland also sings – as a professional soprano.

The Hayfield-based pair will both feature as soloists in the upcoming concert, alongside two other talents, contralto Lucy Vallis and baritone Chris O’Hara.

The event will also feature a 14-piece orchestra including musicians from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

The choir will be performing Mozart’s dramatic Requiem Mass in D minor and the light-hearted Welcome to All the Pleasures by Henry Purcell.

There will also be two orchestral pieces by Mozart, the Clarinet Quintet in A and his Divertimento No 2 for two basset horns and bassoon.

Tickets are priced at £9 and £7, available by phone: 01663 746413; from Hayfield Chemist; from any choir member or on the door.
