Sainsbury's issues update on its face mask policy ahead of law change

Sainsbury’s has revealed what its policy on face masks will be when their use becomes mandatory at shops across England from tomorrow, Friday, July 24.

Under the new rules, anybody not wearing a face covering inside a shop – other than those who are exempt, including children under 11 and those with certain disabilities – will face a fine of up to £100.

Should someone without an exemption refuse to wear a face covering, a shop can deny them entry and call police if they refuse to comply.

Police will have the power to issue a fine, though the Government has described enforcement as a last resort’.

Asked on Twitter what approach it would take when it comes to enforcing the new rule, a spokesman for the retailer replied: “”e won’t be challenging customers without a mask when they enter or when they are in store since they may have a reason not to wear a mask.”
