THE SUMMER’S sporting theme continues in this week’s Looking Back with a photograph of Buxton athletes taken over 100 years ago.
The group, pictured in 1908, were all believed to be members of an athletics club in Buxton.
Among them was keen sportsman Horace Stableford, of Nunsfield Road, Buxton. A well-known footballer and runner, he won many trophies and medals.
His granddaughter Sheila Cunningham, who submitted the photograph to the Advertiser, said Horace was a true Buxtonian.
“Horace was a well-known figure in the town,” said Sheila, of Brown Edge Road.
“He used to work on the railways for many years, driving carts and later, to his great pleasure, was one of the first men to drive a railway lorry.”
Horace had also served with the Army, driving ambulances, and on his return remarkably spoke fluent Russian!
