Golden chance to see '˜Bosnia'sBillie Holiday'

A true Balkan diva used to gracing the greatest stages of central and Eastern Europe, Amira has been dubbed ‘Bosnia’s Billie Holiday’.

Perhaps more akin to Edith Piaf, Amira was born in Sarajevo at the time when the popularity of traditional music in the former Yugoslavia was at its peak.

Amira learned sevdah singing from her mother, sparking a lifelong fascination with the oral traditions of the Balkans.

It is not easy to find a single word in English for the Bosnian concept of sevdah, although yearning perhaps comes closest. Like the Spanish duende, it carries multiple meanings.

Amira is nowthe foremost advocate of modern sevdah.

In her live performance at Buxton’s Pavilion Arts Centre on Sunday, May 22, Amira will be accompanied by Ante Gelo on guitar and Zvonimir Sestak on double bass.

The concert starts at 7.30pm.
