Founded in 2009, Buxton Brewery – which also runs the Tap House and Cellar Bar in George Street – has emerged stronger than ever after a challenging year.

After seeing draft beer sales plummet when the first lockdown began, a shift to focus on cans and bottles has now brought huge success.

“This time last year roughly 90 per cent of our business was from cask and keg sales which disappeared almost overnight in March,” says founder Geoff Quinn, who started the brewery in his garage 11 years ago.

“Fortunately, we had already invested in a new canning machine, so once that was ready to go, we flipped the business around and then 90 per cent of our sales came from cans.”

In September, Buxton Brewery finished commissioning its fourth brew house and that, along with the new canning line, is set to provide a tasty future for the small firm, which has 14 employees. The team currently brews about four times a week, producing around 3,000 litres each time, and Buxton’s beers have been named among the world's best by RateBeer.

With a core range of around 20 beers, including long-term favourite Axe Edge, the well-established brewery has become known for its annual release of award-winning barrel-aged beers which are a highlight for ale lovers both locally and further afield.

Its 2020 Barrel Masters series sees a range of porters, stouts and other ales aged in bourbon and scotch barrels to bring a complex character and flavour that’s all their own.

“Barrel aging is a big investment because it takes a lot of time and effort to make the brews turn out properly,” adds Geoff. “It’s something we like to do well and that we’re very proud of.

“Overall, it’s proved to be a very positive year. We were put into a position where we had to sink or swim early on, and it was actually really motivating and forced us to work even harder - and it’s paid off.”
