McDonald's re-opens 11 restaurants for walk-in service - including one near here

McDonald’s has re-opened 11 of its restaurants for walk-in service – the first time in months fast food fans have been able to set foot inside a branch.

From 11am today, customers will be able to walk in and collect their food in person at 11 branches – including one handy for many locals.

Following the opening of a few restaurants for delivery only, then drive thrus, the firm is starting the re-opening of its branches with motorway service station restaurants, including Tibshelf, south of Sheffield on the M1.

McDonald’s UK chief executive Paul Pomroy said: "Following a closed test in London last month, I am pleased to confirm that we will begin reopening for takeaway and click and collect.

"Starting on Wednesday 17 June, in 11 Roadchef service station locations, we will welcome motorway users back inside our restaurants for the first time since March.

"We’re taking our time to get this right, reviewing our processes before we gradually roll-out to high streets, towns and city centres from 24 June onwards."

But things will be a little different inside, with efforts to keep staff and customers safe.

To help people order safely, McDonald's is making the following changes:

Clear signposting and floor-markings to create a one-way system around restaurants

Limiting numbers in restaurants to with social distancing – this will vary depending upon the restaurant size and lay-out;

Customers asked in only when space becomes available

You'll be asked to sanitise your hands at a cleaning station

Fewer self-order screens switched on - which will be sanitise "at least every 30 minutes". You can also order via the My McDonald’s app;

Children are still welcome, McDonald's is putting away its crayons and colouring sheets and keeping play areas and digital play areas closed;

Seating areas, customer toilets and lifts will remain closed;

Recycling points will also remain closed

All those come on top of the changes already made that you might be familiar with from drive thrus or delivery restaurants.

These include:

Perspex screens in the kitchens, service areas and Drive-thru windows and provide additional protective equipment for our teams, including disposable gloves for people in customer and courier facing positions and face coverings

Serving a reduced menu over reduced hours (11am-10pm)

Contactless payment methods and cap your spend at £25 wherever possible
