Pet owners offered vaccine amnesty after disease discovery

McMurtry and Harding Veterinary Practices are asking owners of cats and dogs to check their vaccination records after cases of parvovirus and feline leukaemia were discovered in the area recently.

To help owners who may have fallen behind with their pet’s immunisation, McMurtry and Harding is offering an immediate vaccine amnesty, allowing them to restart a complete vaccination programme for the price of a single booster.

Vet Michael Colgan said: “Parvovirus in dogs can easily be spread, either via dog faeces, direct dog to dog contact, or even brought into the household on shoes.

“When it affects unprotected dogs young or old it can be particularly unpleasant with continual severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea, in many cases despite the best veterinary care the dog cannot be saved.”

Michael added: “Similarly for Cats there are a number of diseases such as cat flu and feline leukaemia where failure to vaccinate leaves pets very vulnerable to distressing disease which can be potentially fatal.

“Unfortunately there are still a large number of pets that have never been vaccinated or whose vaccinations have lapsed and this is why the outbreaks occur.”

The amnesty lasts until the end of August and is being run at practices in Ashbourne, Wirksworth, Uttoxeter and at Overdale Vets on New Market Street, Buxton.
