Two Derbyshire areas have rising infection rates as tier review date approaches

Two local authority areas in north Derbyshire have rising infection rates as the December 16 review date for the Tier 3 restrictions looms.

In Chesterfield the latest infection rate is 132.5 per 100,000 people. This is for the seven days up to December 5 and means that there were 139 new cases reported in Chesterfield that week.

The week before, in the seven days to November 28, the infection rate in Chesterfield was 129.6, meaning there were 136 new cases.

Data for the most recent four days (December 6-9) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The infection rate in the High Peak area has also been rising. It was 95.0 (88 new cases) in the week to December 5, up from 92.8 (86 new cases) the week before.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 142 have seen a rise in case rates, 171 have seen a fall, and two are unchanged.

On December 16, the first review into the tiers each area was placed in will take place.

This will determine whether Chesterfield, High Peak and the other areas in Derbyshire remain in Tier 3 or are moved down into a lower tier.

The tiers are determined by a number of factors. The coronavirus infection rate, the rate among over-60s and the speed at which cases are rising and falling will all be taken into account.

In Bolsover, the Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire and Amber Valley the infection rate has fallen in recent weeks.
