This is how many covid tests have been carried out at Buxton's community test site so far

The site, at the Pavilion Gardens, opened on February 17. Aimed at people without symptoms, who are continuing to go to work and mix with the public, the site has so far carried out 1,996 tests. Of those, 21 (1.1%) were positive.

And across the county, more than 48,000 tests on Derbyshire residents have been carried out since the first centre opened in December, with a total of 587 positive cases being found.

There are now nine testing centres in Derbyshire including New Mills, which opened yesterday, Chesterfield, Matlock and Heanor. More sites are due to open across the county in the coming weeks.

Dean Wallace, the council’s Director of Public Health, said: “It has been a massive task to set these centres up in communities across the county, but to see that we have identified nearly 600 cases is a great step forward.

“Each one of these people who tested positive had no symptoms, so unbeknown to them they could have been spreading the virus to their families and work mates.

“By getting a regular test people are helping to stop the spread of coronavirus, and although the rate of infection is coming down, we still need to do more.

“I’d urge anyone, and in particular those whose job means they are going out of the home to work, to get tested regularly."

One in three people with coronavirus don’t have symptoms and could be infecting other people without realising.

Buxton's Spring Fair cancelled for 2021 due to coronavirus

The Buxton centre is open from 9am to 7pm seven days a week.

The New Mills centre, at the Adult Education Centre on Spring Bank, is open from 9am to 7pm on Mondays, from 9am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and from 9am to midday on Saturday.

People with symptoms are asked not to visit the community testing centres. Anyone with symptoms – a new, continuous cough, a high temperature or change to taste or smell – should ring NHS 119 or book a test online at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test.
