The national roll-out of the vaccine to immunise people against coronavirus is continuing to gather pace, with an estimated 2.33 million jabs given so far and the programme being extended to include the over-70s.

Currently, the vaccination is only being given in vaccination centres using large-scale venues, hospital hubs and local vaccination services, made up of sites led by general practice teams and pharmacy teams through community pharmacies.

The Government has not yet responded to direct offers from brewery and bar chains, BrewDog and Loungers to allow their premises to be used in the fight against the virus.

But as our pubs, community centres and village halls remain closed during lockdown three, kind-hearted pub owners, managers and staff from across Derbyshire are lining up to allow their venues to be used as vaccination hubs – should the Government need them.

Nicola Sweeney-Ward, who runs The Underdog in Chesterfield Road, Dronfield with wife Sonia Sweeney-Ward, is a former RAF nurse of 15 years and is waiting to be called up to administer coronavirus vaccinations.

She believes offering up her pub as a vaccination hub is the best thing she can do to help in the fight against Covid-19 in the meantime.

“This is a way I can help while I wait...I think it’s time for everyone to pull together and do what they can, whether that’s for their own family, or their community. I think pulling together is the only way we’re going to get through this,” said Nicola.

Emma Clarke, owner of the Chesterfield Arms in Newbold Road, Chesterfield, has also offered up her venue.

She said: “We’ve got a fairly big pub, and can operate a one-in, one-out system so it should work quite well.”

Rory Wallin is a co-owner of The George Inn in Tideswell has offered up the venue because “it’s a community pub and the villages around Tideswell are special places with great people living in the villages.”
