Before the outbreak the average number of items people ordered online was 60. It has since risen to more than 100 items in an average shop.

This means that deliveries are taking longer and fewer orders can fit in each van. These factors, coupled with the high demand for home-delivered groceries, means it is hard to book a slot.

By limiting the size of deliveries, it is hoped that more orders can fit in each van and more slots will be able to be allocated to shoppers each day.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: "We know that it's difficult to get a delivery slot for online shopping at the moment due to high demand, and we ask those who are able to safely come to stores to do so, instead of shopping online, so that we can start to free up more slots for the more vulnerable.

"We're looking at every opportunity to increase the number of slots available and by introducing a limit of 80 items per online order we'll be able to get more orders on to each van, helping us to ensure all customers can get the essentials they need."

Under lockdown conditions people are allowed to leave the house for ‘essential shopping’ for things like food and medicine.

Those with symptoms, or who live with people with symptoms, must arrange for their shopping to be delivered.
