Derbyshire school to stay closed for another week after 10 staff test positive for Covid-19

A Derbyshire school for children with special needs has been forced to remain closed for another week after six more staff tested positive for Covid-19.

In a release sent to parents on Thursday (October 29), Peak School in Chinley said the latest figure brings the total to 10, as four other employees tested positive last week.

A parent, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed concerns that vulnerable children had been put at risk.

"How can 10 staff in one school all test positive?" she asked.

However, headteacher John McPherson assured parents in his statement that a safe return to school was the priority.

He said that while the infected staff are currently being managed at home, the school has also been in touch with any families of pupils who have been identified as a contact.

"It is important that you complete the self-isolation period even if your child has had a test that has returned a negative result,” he said.

"I have shared with you previously our PPE guidance which does create a protective barrier between the staff and pupils.

"However, we ask that you remain vigilant as always to your child's presentation and arrange a test should you be concerned at all with any changes in your child's condition."

The school has also been working closely with Esteem, Public Health England and the Local Infection Control team from Derbyshire County Council Public Health Department.

Mr McPherson added: "We have all agreed, following discussion with the Infection Control Team that the school should remain closed until November 9.”
