Katie Porter started working as a dance fitness instructor at Buxton Swimming and Fitness recently, and said she wanted to provide a way of the elderly staying in shape and keeping emotionally well while they are in isolation.

She also plans to produce online exercise classes for younger and more active gym users so people who are missing their workouts and classes.

Katie, 21, of Ecclesbourne Drive, Buxton, said she still has an income from other employment and wanted to use her time “to help other people as well.”

She said: “Exercise isn’t just beneficial for physical health but for mental health as well. People are not used to being cooped up in the house, and a lot of older people can’t even go out for a walk, which is something a lot of them liked to do, and it’s really easy to get into a bit of a slump if you’re stuck at home.

“I’m also going to do a video for people who are younger and more active – I plan to do one that is one of my usual routines that will be more high impact, and also one where that is toned down and more suitable for older people. I also plan to produce one where I am sitting down for people who are less mobile.”
